We are living in a world full of options. Adults and children alike have a wealth of options to their disposal. Like so many things in life this can either benefit you or it can destroy you.
I believe that adults earn this luxury, kids don’t. When I grew up you only had two options: it’s either this or that, nothing else. You either eat this food or you go hungry; you either wear these shoes or you go barefoot; you either get up for church or you get beaten out of bed and get a jug of cold water on your face as a bonus. Life was good and we grew up to be good. Today it’s acceptable for kids to say: “I don’t feel like going to church, I’m too tired, I will go next week.”
In my mother’s house church was not debatable – it wasn’t an option, it was the only option. Even when I was an adult in my mom’s house, coming home in the early hours of a Saturday morning, I still had to go to church, because my mom made me get up.
Proverbs 22: 6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” I thank God for a mother who showed me no other option. Because when life hit me hard with no-one to turn to and no place to run to, I know who to call upon, I know where to run to. I run to the throne of grace, of love and hope, I run to the One who holds me close and promises me a better tomorrow. I have God to hold onto.
In this life where our children are faced with so many challenges, Christ is their only hope. Have you introduced them to this hope? Do your children have someone or something to hold onto in their darkest times, when they feel alone and had given up on life? Do they know God? Have you introduced them to the One, the only one who can save them from this world. Do they know Matthew 11:28 which says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”?
Today I’m saddened by another young life lost because of suicide. I remember how I too have faced many dark and trying times as a young adult. And I remember even more clearly how God saved me from myself and the cruelty of this world. When I was in the dark, I found him there.
Today I plead with every parent to raise your children to know the Lord. Even if it means that you beat them out of bed to go to church, do it, do it for them, it will save them when they’re older when life gets too tough to handle. Give them no option, for in the end, when they’re left standing alone, God will be their only option!
It’s not easy to raise children in this world today, and we as parents falter and don’t always know what the right thing is to do, but the best thing we can ever give our children is the gift of hope, the gift of life, it is to give them God.
